Volunteering for Valentine's

Writer's picture: Michaelene Karlen Michaelene Karlen

On Valentine's day, I had the pleasure of travelling to Gillette Children's Hospital for a Valentine's arts and craft party with Miss Minnesota and Miss Minnesota's Outstanding Teen. During Valentine's week I also volunteered at a nursing home to visit with the patients and perform a dance for them.

What a magical time I had spending Valentine's Day at Gillette Children's Hospital celebrating with the sweetest kids! This little boy pictured above was very shy at first, but when we showed him all the Valentine's goodies we had for him, he lit up and smiled! He loved the heart stamps the most and decorated a coloring page with me while he waited with his mom for his appointment.

We also met Jackie, who is actually from Owatonna and used to attend one of the schools I teach my Raise The Barre dance workshops at. What a small world!

She is such a sweetheart. She loved looking at my pink heart necklace. I loved her glass beaded necklace and asked her if she made it. She pointed to her mom and said that she made it for her.

I loved getting to know the patients and helping them make some fun crafts! Seeing their smiling faces warmed my heart. I'm so happy we were able to spend time with them on such a special day.

During Valentine's week I also visited the residents of Fairview Care Center. Some of my

Raise The Barre students from St. John's Lutheran Church made some very special

Valentine's cards that I delivered to the patients. The residents were so happy to get a Valentine's card!

After visiting, I was so happy to perform one of my dance solos for them.

What I love most about performing is seeing the smiles on everyone's face and knowing that they were impacted by my art. The patients told me how beautiful my dance was and how much they loved watching the performance.
